Accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
GU/MSB is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award master’s degrees, bachelor of science degrees, associate of applied science degrees, diplomas and certificates. The ACICS is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
National and regional accreditation standards
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes two main types of accreditation: national and regional. Have you ever wondered what it means to be nationally or regionally accredited?
Both types of accreditation require schools to go through rigorous procedures and peer review before they are granted accredited status. Both types of accrediting agencies value a high level of faculty credentials. Both types of accreditation must meet U.S. Department of Education standards. Neither type of accreditation is easy to attain.
Educational credentials from a nationally or regionally accredited institution indicate to employers that job candidates have been through a rigorous program of study.
National and regional accreditation – what is the difference?
National accreditation agencies traditionally evaluate institutions which share a primary mission: giving students the knowledge and skills they need to be immediately employable in specific careers upon graduation. A few distinctions of national accreditation are as follows:
- National accreditation grants are reviewed at most every 8 years and often are reviewed more frequently.
- Nationally accredited schools must provide statistics such as retention rates, placement rates and audits on a yearly basis. These statistics must show that students are not only getting jobs, but they are getting jobs in the fields for which they are trained.
- National accrediting bodies operate throughout the country, reviewing entire institutions.
- Historically, national accreditation has applied to schools that train for specific careers.
Globe University and Minnesota School of Business are nationally accredited institutions.
Regional accreditation is generally sought by traditional colleges and universities. These accrediting bodies differ from national accrediting bodies in the following ways:
- Regional accreditation grants are reviewed only every 10 years.
- A regional accrediting agency serves a distinct geographic area of the United States and can only grant accreditation in the region to which it belongs. There are six regional accrediting agencies in the United States.
- Historically, regional accreditation has been applied to public and private colleges and universities.
Why is GU/MSB-Plymouth accredited nationally but not regionally?
A school can be nationally accredited or regionally accredited, but not both. Globe University/Minnesota School of Business chose to pursue national accreditation because those standards more closely meet our mission: to successfully prepare students for specific careers.
Program-specific accreditation
In addition to our national accreditation status, GU/MSB-Plymouth has two program and campus-specific accreditations:

- Globe University/Minnesota School of Business campuses in Woodbury, Plymouth, Rochester, Shakopee, Blaine and Rochester are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Benefits of Accreditation
There are several reasons accreditation is valuable, including:
- Quality assurance. Accreditation assures students and communities that an institution upholds a standard of high quality education.
- Federal funding. Colleges and universities that are accredited through agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are eligible to participate in Title IV programs for financial assistance.
- Credibility. Many employers favor candidates with credentials from accredited institutions.
- Employer tuition reimbursement. Many employer tuition reimbursement plans require the student to attend an accredited college.
