Federal loans and grants through Title IV
Federal loans and grants are some of the first resources students should pursue to get help paying for college. (Grants are awards that do not have to be paid back; loans must be paid back over time.)
- Federal Pell Grant. Pell grants are awarded based on financial need. Pell grants may be awarded in amounts up to $4,731 for the 2008-2009 school year.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). Students with exceptional financial need may be eligible for this program. Students may receive between $100 and $4,000 a year through this grant program.
- Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. These loans are administered by the U.S. Department of Education; the amount awarded is based on financial need.
- Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). This loan program provides assistance to parents who have dependents enrolled at least half-time in undergraduate programs.
- National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant). Full-time students in their third and fourth years of undergraduate study may be eligible for this grant, which awards up to $4,000.
- Academic Competitiveness Grant. This grant is designed for students who have completed rigorous secondary school programs and are enrolled in undergraduate programs.
Minnesota loans and grants
Minnesota residents may be eligible for state loans and grants in addition to federal programs.
- Minnesota State Grant. State grants are available to eligible Minnesota residents for varying amounts, depending on financial need.
- Minnesota Post-Secondary Child Care Grant.This grant provides child care assistance to students with young children.
- Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF). The SELF program provides assistance to students enrolled at least half-time in eligible post-secondary schools.
Other financial aid assistance
- American Indian College Fund. The AIC provides many scholarship opportunities for American Indian students.
- VA Benefits. Military personnel and their spouses and dependents may be eligible for education benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
